A depreciation policy sets how fixed assets are depreciated in one accounting book.
A policy covers one or more fixed asset types, such as machinery or vehicles. For each type, the policy has a depreciation rule. The rule sets the useful life for fixed assets of that type. The policy also sets a default depreciation method and period length. It sets the accounts that depreciation and disposal journal entries post to. These are the asset, accumulated depreciation, depreciation expense, gain, and loss accounts.
Each book needs its own policies. A policy can be set up for several legal entities. For each fixed asset type, legal entity, and book, only one policy can be active.
